SETTING THE TABLE
My thesis piece, entitled “Setting the Table,” was a self-exploration on my family’s relationship with myself, expressed through ceramics and printmaking. Since my family is spread out by age and location, some of my favorite memories growing up were made around a dinner table. For this work I created a 6-piece dinnerware set, each setting dedicated to a specific family member and consisting of a bowl, plate, and cup personal to them. The bowls each feature a graphic of an object that represents my first/main memory of the person growing up. The plates depict our emotional connection through texture. And the cups all have the same graphic with a slight twist depending on who’s setting it’s at. I also created a butter dish, napkin rings, and salt and pepper shakers since we always had those on our table growing up. The graphics were first designed on illustrator then transferred to lino-blocks that I hand cut and stamped. The stamps were also used to create the wallpaper and placemats featured in the final exhibition.
